Shenzhen is located just besides the border with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Shenzhen has been a special Economic Zone (SEZ) since 1978, when Deng Xiaoping started his experiment with the open economy to the world, using some SEZ's as experimental grounds. After this moment Shenzhen started growing enourmously fast from an 30.000 inhabitants fishing village to an over 4 million people metropolis nowadays. The city is still growing fast, with many skyscraper projects under construction or on hold. Living standards are getting better in high speed, but poor people are entering the city all the time.

Shenzhen can now be seen as a twin brother or sister of Hong Kong, forming one big agglomeration. Shenzhen just opened the first underground line, which will in the future be linked with the one of Hong Kong. But the border will stay to be a huge barrier to travel between both cities for tourists for years.
